DRPG’s annual BigTalk event, which took place on 19 September 2024, proved to be a groundbreaking showcase of innovation in communication strategies. Hosted at the company’s Midlands Studio complex, the event attracted over 150 clients and industry professionals, all eager to witness the unveiling of DRPG Labs, the global communications group’s newly launched innovation hub.
The event’s theme for 2024, ‘powered by DRPG Labs,’ was brought to life by DRPG’s talented Stage and Scenic teams, who transformed the studio into a series of immersive laboratories. These spaces provided the backdrop for workshops that explored some of the most pressing issues in the communication sector. Topics covered included artificial intelligence, storytelling, behavioural change, and leadership, with experts delivering practical insights through interactive sessions. The setup created an ideal environment for lively debates, allowing attendees to leave with valuable takeaways to implement in their own communication strategies.
A major highlight of the event was the opening panel discussion featuring industry leaders Ryan Curtis-Johnson (chief communications officer of The Valuable 500), Sam Wilson (managing director of Syntiro Associates), Toby Bassford (managing director of Tillon), and Spencer Holt (chief executive & people officer of Merlin Entertainments). In a dynamic session, the panellists tackled controversial statements based on current research into key communication challenges. The discussions touched on hot-button issues such as sustainability, accessibility, and reward and recognition, prompting a series of lively and thought-provoking exchanges.
Dale Parmenter, CEO of DRPG, expressed pride in the event’s success, stating, “BigTalk 2024 was a pivotal moment for us, showcasing the future of communication and the innovative spirit that drives DRPG. Our aim was to create insightful discussions, and it was rewarding to see such meaningful engagement from all participants. Passion is alight in the creative industry right now, and we’re pleased to offer our clients a seat at the forefront.”
Following the day’s sessions, guests enjoyed a dinner curated by local Chef Graham Brooks, featuring ingredients sourced predominantly from Worcestershire. This locally inspired menu emphasized DRPG’s commitment to sustainability, with 96% of the ingredients produced in the region.
The evening concluded with a unique recognition ceremony, honouring exceptional achievements in communication. DRPG awarded bespoke trophies, created from 3D-printed recycled filament and repurposed wooden bases, to clients who had made significant contributions to global projects and collaborations. These awards recognized technical innovation, behavioural change, and exemplary use of communication channels.
One attendee, Antonia Voss, head of EMEA & APAC Events at Blackstone, shared her excitement, saying, “I knew there’d be innovation, but I didn’t expect it to be at this level. The creativity and the energy have just been phenomenal. Seeing colleagues of yours rapping to Vanilla Ice along with cutting edge AI is probably something I wasn’t expecting.”
Sarah White, channel communications director at EE, added, “I would definitely recommend people to come to BigTalk. It’s so important to get out of the corporate bubble to find new inspiration. It was a great use of time, and I’m walking away with some brilliant ideas.”
BigTalk 2024 once again positioned DRPG as a forward-thinking leader in the communications industry, delivering creative strategies and innovative solutions to shape the future of global communication.
