Michelle Rees and Kate Bullard, directors, Eventprofslive, talk morning motivation as winter closes in.

It’s November and we all know motivation is starting to fall away at this time of year, it often tends to do so.

As event professionals, we’ve been through it all over these past few years. We had to navigate changes in how we work and the type of events we produce (hybrid). We’ve had to build an entire skillset in our careers where we have become experts on legislation interpretation and contract re-writing (thanks, Covid-19). We are exhausted, which often means those things that spark joy for us tend to be put on the back burner— getting exercise in and reaching out to friends all get deprioritised when we become busy, and it’s not helpful for our mental well-being.

It’s that last push to close Q4 and, subsequently, 2022 strong; we need to keep momentum and do so whilst ensuring our mental health doesn’t suffer, but we need to have balance. That’s where getting up that little bit earlier can help.

What should you include?

One thing we at Eventprofslive are massive advocates for is building strong and focused morning routines to help win the day by conquering our mornings. By structuring your mornings well, we find you can not only approach your day with intention but, it means you can dedicate your mornings to all the things on your to-do list (whether they are personal or professional), which gives you the rest of the day to get your head down and focus on your role, apparent in the notion that you have been able to give a portion of your day to things that are meaningful to you.

One-half of Eventprofslive, Michelle Rees, operates a 6am club accountability group with other event managers. Each Tuesday and Wednesday morning, members connect on Whatsapp at 6am, check in on each other (making sure they are up) and share their goals for the morning. These goals are all centred around fitness, working on professional and personal development, and even just taking the opportunity to curl up with a good book and a coffee before work, and it’s been so helpful these past few years.

One crucial aspect of building a solid morning routine, rests heavily on the evening before. It’s essential to set goals of what you want to achieve by getting up early, which will be top of mind (or in a notepad by the side of your bed) so that when the alarm goes off, you remember your why.

Whilst not everyone is a morning person, we would advocate giving it a go to see how much you can get out of your day; that means you get that pocket of time for yourself and your goals each day before you give your all to your event management career.
