Olympia London has announced the nomination of Barons Court Project as charity of the year.

As part of its sustainability policy, The Grand Plan, the venue elects a charity to support, fundraise and participate in corporate volunteering for the year, with announcements taking place during the summer.

Barons Court Project has served the local community for 33 years and is the only drop-in centre in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham for people on low incomes who are vulnerable to mental health issues or are homeless.

The charity meets basic human needs by offering showers, laundry, postal collection, haircuts and more to rough sleepers. The café serves over 2,500 meals every year to Service Users. In addition there is practical guidance on benefits, housing and mental health advice, through 1-1 work.

The appointment was welcomed by Cllr Dayrl Brown, Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham: “I am delighted that Olympia London has chosen to support Barons Court Project, which is one of my chosen charities for the year. The work they undertake with the most vulnerable from our community is outstanding and they deserve the support of the whole community from our Borough”.

Figures released last month revealed that more than 300,000 people are now officially homeless in the UK. According to The Guardian, this figure shows that for every 200 people in the UK, 1 person is sleeping rough or accommodated intemporary housing.

With a very limited number of staff, Barons Court Project counts on the support of dedicated volunteers and the local community to continue to provide the much needed work which enables people to develop their full potential and enjoy life to the full.
