British business tycoon Richard Cousins, who tragically died alongside his family after a Sydney seaplane crash last year, has left his £41m fortune to the charity Oxfam.

Cousins was CEO of catering giants Compass Group, whose history dates back almost 80 years. He and his family were on holiday for New Year’s Eve 2017, when the seaplane they were travelling in crashed. His two sons, fiancée, and his fiancee’s daughter were all on board the plane.

In his will, Cousins had a “common tragedy clause”, which meant if his sons were to also pass away, the majority of his fortune would be donated to Oxfam.

The funding comes at an important time for the charity, which received a temporary funding ban from the Department for International Development after a scandal surfaced regarding aid workers in Haiti preying on sex workers.
