City council chiefs believe Newcastle can become a world leader in the field of using digital technology to transform a city.

The council’s cabinet has approved bold plans for a tehnological revolution on Tyneside, pledging to use digital sensors and data to revolutionise the way it deals with problems like parking and air pollution.

Local authority chiefs are now awaiting the results of a trial programme with tech giant Cisco on Mosley Street during the Great Exhibition of the North and will now seek to procure a tech partner to roll out similar data-collecting infrastructure across the city.

Director of business events at NewcastleGateshead Paul Szomoru told CN: “It is brilliant to see this level of ambition and future thinking. This is one of many  exciting examples of how Newcastle is a smart city, working to tackle complex global challenges like energy and congestion. As a city we’ve been leaders in innovation for over 150 years.”
