The University of Manchester’s flagship conference venue, University Place, is celebrating its 10th anniversary of hosting national and international conferences.

The celebrations were marked publicly on the 4 July with a birthday cake and cupcakes on the first evening of the British Society of Gerontology’s 47th Annual Conference.

The lord mayor of Manchester June Hitchen was a guest and, together with Debora Price, the president of the Society, helped cut the cake to mark the occasion, watched by around 450 delegates.

Jane Pinder, events manager for the University, commented: “We were delighted that the British Society of Gerontology were happy to be part of our anniversary celebrations as their conference took place in the same week that we hosted our first conference for Manchester City Council back in 2008.

“Over the past 10 years, University Place has become a very important venue for our own academics who want to showcase their work through being able to host conferences for societies and associations they are members of, and the venue is also an important asset to the city’s conference portfolio. In the past 10 years thousands of delegates have attended conferences here, our largest being the IUAES conference in 2013 where we hosted around 1,500 delegates, and we are looking forward to celebrating the continued success of University Place in the next 10 years.”
