The National Railway Museum in York has been announced as the host of the Green Gown Awards, which takes place on 8 November 2018.

The black-tie ceremony will see 300 guests descend on the museum, as the awards honour the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland. Over the last 15 years, the awards have attracted a number of high profile hosts such as Lemn Sissay MBE, chancellor of the University of Manchester and Mike Barry, director of sustainable business at Marks & Spencer.

Guests at the event will enjoy arrival drinks and awards dinner in the National Railway Museum’s Station Hall, amongst the platforms between the museum’s famous royal carriages, such as Queen Victoria’s Carriage. The space will be transformed expertly from a public museum by day to an elegant setting for the award celebrations, framed by the beautiful historical carriages.

Helen Beresford-Boyse, sales manager at the National Railway Museum, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Green Gown Awards at the museum and to play a part in honouring the shortlisted institutions and celebrating their sustainability achievements. Alongside our official catering partner Levy UK, we hold a Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark, which provides all of our clients, delegates and visitors the guarantee that they are eating meals that have been freshly prepared, and are healthy and sustainable. These values coupled with our unique setting make the National Railway Museum the ideal venue to host these prestigious awards.”

Iain Patton, chief executive at the EAUC, said: “Every day, tireless environmental, social and sustainability leaders across the UK and Ireland are driving change and showing the value universities and colleges bring to the economy and society. The Green Gown Awards exist to give them the recognition and platform they need to share their learning and do even more. With the National Railway Museum the Green Gown Awards share a passion for science, innovation, learning to advance society and a better quality of life for us all.”
